IIHMR University PhD Cohort Achieves 50% Women Scholars

The incoming cohort consists of 20 doctoral scholars drawn from prestigious national and international healthcare, research, and policy institutions. These include the World Health Organization (WHO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), NITI Aayog, AIIMS Jammu, Fortis Healthcare, Narayana Health, Aster Medcity, The Antara Foundation, Shri Saraswati Karad Hospital, and several other reputed organizations. The diversity of backgrounds brings rich perspectives essential for tackling complex public health issues.

Dr. PR Sodani, President, IIHMR University, highlighted the robust interest in the programme. “The university received more than 120 applications from India and overseas, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Liberia, and other countries. Such diverse research perspectives are essential for addressing complex public health challenges and developing evidence-based solutions that improve health outcomes. Our immersive programme aims to nurture scholars who have the potential to influence and benefit communities at scale,” he stated.

Established as a leading institution in health management and research, IIHMR University’s doctoral programme spans key interdisciplinary domains, including Public Health, Hospital and Health Management, Development Management, Digital Health, and Pharmaceutical Management. Till 2025, the university has successfully awarded PhD degrees to 52 scholars, who have collectively contributed around 70 research papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals, demonstrating the programme’s growing academic impact.

Dr. Kajal Sitlani, Coordinator of the PhD Programme, welcomed the new scholars and urged them to approach their research with curiosity, integrity, and a strong commitment to generating evidence that can shape healthcare policy and practice. Dr. Himadri Sinha, Provost, IIHMR University, provided an overview of the academic journey ahead, familiarizing the cohort with the university’s research framework, academic regulations, and comprehensive institutional support systems designed to foster high-quality scholarly work.

The inaugural orientation programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Suresh Chand Thakur, Registrar, IIHMR University.

This achievement aligns with national and global efforts to promote gender diversity in STEM and health-related fields. Experts note that increased female representation in doctoral research enhances the inclusivity and relevance of studies addressing women’s health, maternal care, and equitable health systems.
